Design and Hardware

The RT–AC68U router from Asus is a significant update to its older RT–N66U and RT–AC66U routers. This router is the first I have seen with such high-end specs. However, I am sure that other vendors will soon offer similar products. Broadcom’s new BCM4709 Wi-Fi chipset can offer up to 1.3Gbps. This isn’t a new feature, but it offers 802.11n at 2.4GHz up to 600Mbps, up from the previous 450Mbps limit speed. TurboQAM allows each 2.4GHz spatial stream to deliver 200Mbps rather than 150Mbps. This chip has more benefits for the older 2.4GHz Wi-Fi than the 5GHz WiFi.

However, you will need a TurboQAM compatible wireless client to fully take advantage of the features. Legacy clients and current clients will also benefit from the improved performance, but not as much. The RT-AC68U can be a great option for anyone who needs to upgrade their home network from 802.11ac to 802.11n but doesn’t want a router that is 802.11ac compatible.

This is a good choice for those who are looking for 802.11ac but don’t want to pay more for a real AC1750 or AC1900 router. Most people won’t be able to take advantage of the 600Mbps available by this router. Many recommend that you choose something between $100 and $150. We need a mix of mid-range and high-end products. The RT-AC68U can be used on both 2.4GHz and 5.GHz Wi-Fi frequencies. The router also features three antennas for each frequency band. There are four LAN ports at the back of the router, as well as one WAN port, USB ports, and lights that indicate power, Internet connection, and other information.

These features are housed in a small, sleek, black box that looks great next to other high-tech gadgets. It’s always a pleasure to see manufacturers keep the design simple. A Wi-Fi switch can be found on the router’s side. This allows for quick switching. This is a nice feature as buttons are becoming more common.

You have to remember to reconnect your Wi-Fi connection when you power down or restart your device. I’ve accidentally turned my wireless network off because I forgot to do so. This meant that I had no Internet access until I discovered what was happening. This design decision could easily be overlooked if it weren’t for Asus’s excellent Express Gate software. It allows users to instantly boot into an OS with a desktop, basic applications like Skype, and the internet browser preloaded.

Installation

Setting up the Asus RT-AC68U dual-band wireless router was a breeze. The Quick Start Guide made it foolproof and I had my computer connected to the LAN port in no time. I then launched a Web browser and automatically the router setup page opened. The Quick Internet Setup Wizard walked me through the rest of the process, which was very straightforward.

One thing I noticed right off the bat was that there wasn’t an automatic firmware check for upgrades like there was with the RT-AC66U that I tested previously. However, when I checked manually for updates, sure enough, there was one waiting for me. Oddly enough, this is something that has been addressed and fixed in this particular model; unlike my experience trying to update the firmware on the RT-AC66U.

Overall, I was quite pleased with how easy it was to set up the Asus RT-AC68U dual-band wireless router and found that its performance was excellent. The two bands operated smoothly and without any glitches or interruptions. Additionally, the router’s design is top-notch and sleek – perfect for any home décor. I would definitely recommend this product to anyone in the market for a new wireless router.

Performance

The ASUS RT-AC68U router is one of the fastest routers we’ve ever seen. It used the IxChariot test to achieve a blazing fast 108.8Mbps at fifteen feet on N band, and was also faster than average when connected via AC. The performance at thirty feet was equally impressive; it reached over 300Mbps in both bands and outperformed Linksys’s offering in every category.

Its N speed trailed off a bit at fifty feet, but its 302.8Mbps throughput on AC band more than made up for that, and easily beat out Linksys’s showing of 251.5 Mbps in the same category/band combination. Its greatest achievement came at 140 feet with 2917Mbps throughput on AC band, trouncing the WRT1900AC’s showing of 251.5Mbps.

At 5 feet, the RT-ac68U was only slightly slower than Linksys’s more expensive $249 offering, but this is still an impressive performance for a router in this price range. Overall, the ASUS RT-AC68U is an excellent performer that is sure to please even the most demanding home networks. So if you’re in the market for a high-performance router, be sure to check out the ASUS RT-AC68U. You won’t be disappointed.
