Top 8 Best RCN Compatible Modems Review
1. NETGEAR Cable Modem CM600
NETGEAR Cable Modem CM600 DOCSIS 3.0 is compatible with various cable providers, including RCN, Comcast Xfinity and Time Warner Cable. It has 192 MB RAM for housing multiple websites at once, which is perfect for families who like to use the net simultaneously without slowing down.
The modem also features 8 MB available NOR flash memory (great for streaming), WiFi support (separate router required), 1 Gigabit Ethernet Ports, 24×8 channel bonding capability (sending data closer to download speed). All of these options help ensure that you stay connected whether through phone or computer.
2. ARRIS Surfboard S33 DOCSIS 3.1 Multi-Gigabit Cable Modem
If you call RCN, they will most likely recommend the S33 to you. The S33 cable modem is a high-performance and low-cost option. It may achieve speeds up to 3500 Mbps. This is represented as real-world speed of 2500 Mbps plus or minus 10%. These speeds let you watch several 4K movies at once and play any additional game simultaneously.
At present, RCN does not provide an internet plan that matches this device. If you have a 500 MBPS or higher plan, this modem is suggested for you. This modem isn’t compatible with ethernet or coaxial connections. You’ll need to purchase these cables separately.
3. Motorola MG7700 Modem WiFi Router Combo with Power Boost
If you want a gateway with an RCN 500 Mbps or lower plan, the Motorola MG7700 is recommended. The router can upload at 160Mbps and has a real-world speed of 600Mbps. You may watch numerous 4k movies at the same time. A wireless Wi-Fi power booster is also included with the router. This raises the wireless signal strength to improve coverage in small and medium households.
It’s a useful feature, but it isn’t ground-breaking. Homes that are small or medium in size will have adequate coverage, while huge houses might suffer from Wi-Fi dead zones. The MG7700 is a dual-band router with an integrated wireless access point and two detachable omnidirectional antennas. It supports both 2.4GHz and 5 GHz networks.
The difference between the two is that 5 GHz offers quicker speeds, whereas 2.4 GHz has a longer range. I believe the MG7700 to be a fantastic bargain. If your RCN plan offers 940 Mbps, you don’t need it.
4. NETGEAR Nighthawk Multi-Gig Speed Cable Modem
Despite the fact that it was difficult to discover modems that could handle the high-speed Gigabit internet packages, we chose the Netgear Nighthawk CM1100. This device provides faster speeds and constant connectivity at a reasonable price, but it is in line with user expectations and cutting-edge technologies.
The Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 is DOCSIS 3.1 compatible. This implies that it can provide 32×8 streaming channels. Despite the fact that this device has 32 downstream and eight upstream channels, it is still 10 times faster than DOCSIS 3.0 modems with a similar channel spread. If the ISP permits it, this modem may achieve speeds of up to 2Gbps.
Channel bonding and link aggregation complement existing DOCSIS 3.1 technology in terms of data transmission rates. The Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 is another one of RCN’s few QoS-enabled routers. When testing in speed labs for certain mid-range RCN plans, our experts were able to reach 600Mbps speeds.
The Netgear Nighthawk CM1100 is a robust design that weighs just 1 pound and has two gigabit Ethernet ports. Even if you don’t intend to establish a wireless network, the RCN internet bundle in its wired form may be used without any problems.
5. ASUS CM-32 Modem Router Combo
Imagine if there was a gadget that could access the internet from many devices at once without lag. The Asus CM32 modem-router combination is capable of doing so. If it is placed centrally, this DOCSIS 3.0-based device will provide complete coverage in all rooms. It’s simple to set up and use. With the help of a phone technician, you can have the equipment up and running in minutes.
Despite its ability to handle intense gaming or multiple websites at once, the modem is highly durable. Even while streaming video and playing multiplayer virtual reality games, the device performs admirably. The internet equipment you rent is free of pixel blur or latency.
Although the price may appear to be expensive, keep in mind that this gadget has 32×8 channels and a high data rate before making a purchasing decision. You may buy it as a router/modem without any concerns.
6. NETGEAR – R7000P-100NAS Nighthawk WiFi Router
This NETGEAR router is a powerhouse that provides wireless coverage up to 2000 feet away with AC2300! It has a dual-band so it can work on 600 and 1625Mbps. Send data at speeds up to 2300mbps, making this not only one of the fastest wifi routers out there but also future-proof for current electronics.
You get 3x amplifiers and Beamforming+ in this sleek and stylish design, along with MU-MIMO which increases the speed! And Dynamic QoS ensures that your devices still receive an internet connection while you’re playing video games or streaming videos online.
Quality isn’t forgotten either; it features smart connect, which remembers what device you actually used last (it’ll prioritize such devices), along with parental control settings.
7. TP-Link TC-W7960S Cable Modem Router Wi-Fi
The TP Link TC W7960 modem router combination is a budget-friendly alternative for RCN-approved modems. The TP Link router combo works with Cablevision, Time Warner, and Comcast Xfinity internet services. The download speed of the TP Link TC W7960 modem router combination can reach up to 300 Mbps. 8 downstream and 4 upstream channels are included in the TC Link TC W7960.
This prevents your connection from losing internet connections or becoming sluggish. The TP Link modem can also provide speeds up to 300 megabits per second (Mbps). TP Link is one of the best broadband modem providers for video streaming and online gaming. The DOCSIS 3.0 TP Link TC modem offers faster internet speeds for all connected devices, both wireless and wired.
With the TP Link TC, you may control both guest and parental network settings. You may utilize the guest network to connect with friends and family members who are not part of your main network. The TP Link parental control allows you to keep track of what your children are viewing on the internet.
8. NETGEAR C7500-100NAS NETGEAR Nighthawk X4
The Netgear Nighthawk X4 is a sophisticated RDN-compatible modem that can be customized to meet your unique requirements. The Nighthawk X4 modem is a three-in-one, two-band device with a 4 Gigabit wired switch and an A3200 Wi-Fi router. The Netgear Nighthawk X4 modem is DOCSIS RCN certified at 3.0 speeds.
It’s ideal for streaming 4K HD video and Internet gaming because to its lightning fast speed of up to 24 times faster than the previous model, the DOCSIS 2. Internet surfing is smooth due to the machine’s 1 GHz maximum clock rate. The Parental Controls in the Nighthawk X4 allow you to restrict what your children see.
You can set up a guest network in the Nightgear Nighthawk, which separates visitors from the main network. This has no impact on overall network speed. The Genie App from any mobile device or tablet allows you to remotely monitor your network. It is simple and quick to set up the Nightgear Nighthawk X4.

What modems are compatible with RCN?
Typically, any modem that has at least 24 x 8 channel bonding will work for speeds of 330 Mbps or less. For the 500 Mbps and Gig speeds, a DOCSIS 3.1 cable modem is required. With that info in mind, all of the modems listed above will work with RCN.
Can I use my own DOCSIS 3.1 modem on RCN’s network?
Yes. Currently, the Arris SB8200, Netgear CM1000, and Netgear CM1200 are compatible. However, the Motorola MB8600 and the Netgear C7800 are not approved at this time.
RCN compatible modems are a good alternative to renting. When you rent from RCN, they provide the modem and have total control over what type of internet speeds you get based on their own plan tiers. If your housing is not yet wired for DOCSIS 3.1 or if it doesn’t offer this standard at all, there may be some limitations with buying a new one that will work perfectly for your home because most cable providers only carry these types of modems in limited quantities right now.
You still save money by purchasing an RCN approved modem rather than continuing to pay monthly rental fees (and potentially more when upgrading plans), but make sure to do research before purchase so that you can find the best router-modem combo available.
