NETGEAR CAX80 Reviews

Design

The NETGEAR Nighthawk CX80 looks a bit like a coat hanger, with eight antennas. The device is made of black plastic and has rubber feet on the bottom to keep it from slipping around. It’s not as bulky as other wireless routers that we’ve tested, such as the Linksys WRT1900ACS (17 by 5 by 11 inches) or the Netgear R6400, which stands about 10 inches tall, but it weighs a hefty 4 pounds, making it a little unwieldy for travel.

Performance

NETGEAR Nighthawk CX80’s performance was among the fastest we’ve recorded for a wireless router at close proximity – it scored 84 percent of the maximum throughput possible at 15 feet. Its range was above average, too, extending to 85 feet.

Speed

The CX80 hit peaks of 100 Mbps at 5 feet, 85 feet, and 30 feet. But its average score was around 67 percent of total possible throughput at 15 feet.

Range

Routing performance improved in our tests when we moved away from the router – at 15 feet, with only one wall separating it from our laptop running an online speed test, NETGEAR Nighthawk CX80 recorded speeds of 76 Mbps on average, with a peak of 97 Mbps.

Ease of Use

NETGEAR’s Genie interface is very similar to what you’ll find on other wireless routers—there’s no getting lost when trying to set up security or manage your network when using this interface. In addition, the router supports WPS for connecting new devices to your network with a push of a button.

Value

The NETGEAR Nighthawk CX80’s more $200 price tag is average compared with other wireless routers we’ve tested-its speed and range are good enough for this price range. But if you don’t need all those antennas, consider the Linksys WRT1900ACS, which is cheaper and offers similar performance.

Pros & Cons

Pros:

  • Cat 7 Fios plans
  • Gigabit internet connection
  • Verizon Fios availability
  • Unbeatable customer support
  • Excellent speeds on 5 GHz
  • A ton of features at a reasonable price point

Cons:

  • 2.4 GHz performance is relatively lackluster compared to similarly priced routers on the market today.
  • Costly initial installation fee – but you’ll get a year subscription to HBO and other channels. (Still, the free setup would be nice.)

Conclusion

The NETGEAR Nighthawk CX80 delivers top-notch performance and has plenty of extra antennas that can help extend your Wi-Fi range throughout a large home, but its bulky design makes it better suited for placement on the floor than on a bedside table.
